Riding down the live oak lined Frederica Rd on St. Simons Island you’ll find Bennie’s Red Barn Dinner Club. Attached to this restaurant is a quaint little place called Ziggy Mahoney’s where the Golden Isles Shag Club has been coming on Thursday nights to dance for the last 10 years. You are first impressed by the massive live oak tree full of Spanish moss that appears to be growing out of the middle of the building. Inside you are engulfed by the fragrance of fresh buttered popcorn. Stools are situated around tables made from old telephone cable spools with sand filled hurricane oil lamps as centerpieces. The rafters are covered with little white string lights. The well worn wooden dance floor, approx. 24’ x 24’, is situated in front of the DJ booth that also serves as a bandstand. Double doors open from the inside to a covered deck that is built around the huge live oak tree with a seated bar built around it. Smoking is allowed on the covered deck.

There is a $4 cover charge. Food is available at the restaurant next door. On Thursday nights from 8 pm -10 pm you will be entertained by DJ Wayne Bennett. Afterwards Keenan Carter of the “Ziggy Mahoney Duo” takes over with music and live entertainment. Usually about 65-70 dancers are expected on Thursday nights.

The Golden Isles Shag Club also sponsors the annual “Sand Gnat Shag-a-Ganza” on Jekyll Island in June.
