Just a few miles from the NC/ Virginia state line, you’ll find the Steppin Out Shag Club. The club meets on every Wednesday night at a hidden gem of a place called the Whistle Jacket Grille. ( Named by the way for a thoroughbred race horse belonging to the Marquis of Rockingham in 1752)
The Whistle Jacket Grille has a large lounge where smoking is allowed, and through a separate door you enter the restaurant. In the back room of the stylish restaurant is where you’ll find the shag club. This room has the wooden dance floor (approx 15’ x 21’ ) that the shag club purchased and put down to use weekly in the restaurant. There is plenty of seating and you may order from the full menu here while being treated to a view of the river and the old bridge through glass windows that line the entire back wall of the restaurant. Shag DJ’s rotate playing the tunes from 6:30 -10:00 on shag nights. There is a $2 cover charge and there is usually around 50 members in attendance. Smoking isn’t allowed in the restaurant area but you may go to the lounge to smoke. There is plenty of parking. Just one hint on finding the place - if you follow mapquest - they don’t know that the old bridge is out on Mebane Bridge Rd and the Restaurant is just on the other side of the bridge. Take Harrington Hwy from US 14, then take the first right on to Bethlehem Church Rd and then an immediate right onto the back end of Mebane Bridge Rd.
This club has raised it’s membership to 122 members from 4 in the last 4 years after losing their regular place to meet. They also co-sponsor the “Meet the Area Shag Club” parties with 5 other local area shag clubs.

Enjoyable place to visit. Nice setting. Friendly members.
