Just below the VA/ NC state line, you will find the River City Shag Club in Elizabeth City, NC. They usually meet on the first Saturday of the month at 8:00pm for the monthly social, at The City’s Meeting Place. Summer months sometimes see a change in the regular schedule, so check their calendar for exact dates. They also meet regularly on Wednesdays for shag lessons at 7:00pm with Beverly and Clayton Twine, followed by open dancing. The City Meeting Place, 211 S Hughes Blvd, might first deceive you as a shag location. It has a large open room with black and white tile floor with a 20’ x 46’ area for dancing. There is plenty of seating here and in an adjoining room for diners. In addition to a full menu of seafood baskets, chicken, steak and burgers, the City’s Meeting Place has a full bar. There are also pool tables and TV’s in the bar area. There is no cover charge. An average night will bring in about 50-60 members. Smoking is allowed in the restaurant, dance area. Wednesday specials are Natural Light $1 and Saturday specials are Michelob Ultra for $1. Draft beer is always $1.00.
The River City Shag Club also sponsors an annual charity fundraiser in April called “River City Shag Classic”.
