The Monroe Shag Club meets the 2nd Saturday of each month at the American Legion, 700 Sutherland Ave. Monroe, NC. The American Legion has a 30’ x 20’ tile floor area reserved for dancing with plenty of seating around the dance floor. Seating around the bar is a smoking area. TV s are also located at the bar in case one needs to check the game scores or race status. Bar prices are great with $2 beer and $3.50 mixed drinks. The club members always provide an excellent variety of heavy hors devours at the parties. Each month is a different theme, provided by the hosts and hostesses of the month. DJ s that are members of the club are usually rotated to play for the parties throughout the year. Fun includes drawings, raffles and line dances.
The last Wednesday in the month, members of the shag club also meet at a place called J Byrds on Hwy 74 near Wingate.
The Monroe Shag Club has their big fundraiser each year called “Shaggin’ for Dollars” at which they bring in thousands of dollars for local charities with dancers raising money for a dance through sponsors and also with silent auction items. “Elvis” is a member of this shag club also and makes an appearance anytime they are raising money for charity.
Once you’ve been welcomed to the Monroe shag club, you are a friend for life.
