You’ll find members of the Lake
Wylie Shag Club shagging and line dancing on the 14 x 30 wooden
dance floor at Checker’s in Fort Mill. On Tuesday nights they
have free shag lessons beginning at 7pm followed by open dancing
with a DJ till 10pm. They also meet at Checker’s on the 2nd and 4th
Saturdays of each month, with the 4th Saturday yielding the largest
crowd because it is the shag clubs meeting night. The members also
bring food to the club on this night. There is ample parking but
limited seating around the dance floor. More seating is
available in the adjacent bar area that also serves as the smoking
area. There is no smoking allowed around the dance floor. A light
menu is available from the bar. The shag DJ s that rotate playing
the fine music on dance nights are Gary Sarvis, Bobby Bennett, and
Tommy Samole. You will see about 25 of the friendly regulars at
Checker’s on a Saturday night.
This club also co-sponsors the Fifth Saturday dances with 3 of the
other area shag clubs and an annual Fall Frenzy Dance and Dinner in
October.
Plenty of room to dance, great music, friendly members, a cold
drink, and no cover charge - what more could a shagger want !
