Traveling south into the Sunshine State down Interstate 95, you’ll find The First Coast Shag Club situated in one of the oldest coastal towns, Jacksonville, FL. The First Coast Shag Club is fortunate to have several dance locations in their Jacksonville home.
1- On Wednesday nights the First Coast club meets at Cuba Libre Bar.
On Wednesday nights the First Coast club meets at Cuba Libre’,2578 Atlantic Blvd. Lessons are held from 6:45 - 8:15 with open dancing with rotating FCSC DJ s playing from 8:15-10:15. There is plenty of parking and ample seating at this location, right next to Havana Jax Café. There is no cover charge. There is a polished cement floor inside for dancing
2- On Sunday afternoons, shaggers can be found taking lessons and having fun to the music at the Frisky Mermaid Bar & Grill at the Historic Florida House Inn. It is located in the beautiful historic downtown area of Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. Since it is a downtown tourist area, you may have to search for a place to park. The Bar is a small, intimate room in the Florida House Inn. The tables are moved off of the historic hardwood floors ( approx 18’ x 20’ area) for the dancers to shag to the sounds of the rotating FCSC DJ’s. Lessons are offered for free from 4-5 and then there is open dancing till 7pm. There is no cover charge. A menu is available along with full bar. Smokers may go outside to the garden patio where you can also dine. This location usually has around 20 couples.
3- The First Coast Shag Club also has a monthly party every month at the very charismatic club know as Club Savoy. Club Savoy is a place where you can enjoy all types of dance. It is a membership only club that hosts private parties and dance nights for local dance clubs in a safe and fun environment. The club has a large 1300 sq ft wooden dance floor (34’ x 40’) surrounded by mirrors and lights with seating room for 175 people at tables on 3 sides of the dance floor. There is a separate dining room where clubs can set up appetizers for the parties. With the $5 cover charge, members get access to the club which includes free ice, soft drinks and set ups. The club is BYOB, but locker rentals are available for members to keep their beer, alcohol and dance shoes Smokers will have to step outside because it is a non smoking facility. The club is very nicely decorated with silhouettes of dancers, Hall of Fame plaques and memorabilia from the clubs that call it home and most notably, a whole wall is decorated with a mural of Main St Ocean Drive SC. Even the bathrooms are decorated in a dance theme. For their monthly parties you will need to check their calendar for the dates. Cost is $5 for Club Savoy members and $10 for guests.

You’ll find a variety of dance styles, mostly shag, keeping
the beat to the shag/beach music played by the rotating FCSC
DJ s. This club enjoys high energy music and they get down
to business. They eat as soon as they get there and they are
dancing long before most of the Carolina Shag Clubs have
even come in the door. The dance floor won’t be empty all
night with The First Coast Shag Club, so be prepared to
dance, because you will be asked!
