In the capital city of the state that proclaims the Shag as the state dance, you’ll find the Columbia Shag Club. The Columbia Shag Club is the founder of the ACSC (Association of Carolina Shag Clubs) and the First Shag Club formed in 1982. This club has the opportunity to dance weekly in the Columbia area. Tuesday, Friday and Saturday are shag nights at Legends in West Columbia, and Thursdays are shag nights at Jillian’s in the Vista. Jillian’s or the Vista After 5 Summer Concert Series usually also have top beach bands playing on Thursday nights.

The Columbia Shag Club also hosts about 4 parties a year for members and guests. Some of the parties are held at the Pavilion, a wonderful hangout behind the home of Marie Taylor that has a 16’ x16’ wood dance floor, a large seating area, bar and kitchen area, patio and cooking area, that all overlook the water. This club also sponsors an Annual Columbia Invitational, a weekend party held in November.

This shag club of 260 members has an interesting history and boasts several Hall of Famers and the Legendary Phil Sawyer as just a few of it’s members.
