The Brick City Shag Club is not currently meeting anymore - will
give you updated info soon for the Bellview area. **
The Brick City Shag Club is an unsanctioned club with no officers,
no dues, no by-laws and only one rule, "NEVER REFUSE A DANCE".
The club was formed by a small group of people, around 2003, for the
purpose of promoting and preserving "THE SHAG" and Shag Music.
They also promote The Bop & Swing. The Club Name was thought up by
Sandy Watson. Brick City is the nickname for Ocala where
they started dancing. The club over the last few years
has brought the knowledge of the dance to many of the folks in all
the surrounding communities as well as generated lasting friendships
that would not have happened if it were not for the club.
To be a member of the
club all you have to do is come to the VFW Tuesday Night Dance and
have fun.

The Brick City Shaggers, a non sanctioned group of retired and semi
retired folks from active adult communities in the Ocala and Villages
area of Florida, meet every Tuesday night at the Belleview VFW. Dance
lessons are given from 6-7 and then open dancing begins at 7 with DJ
John Schultz also know as "JJ the DJ". For the past 3 years "JJ
the DJ" has been spinning the beach music tunes here in Florida trying
to introduce the beach music to as many people as possible. Three different couples from the club alternate teaching
the shag lessons in 4 week sessions. Because many of the people in this
area are “snowbirds”, the attendance ranges from about 25- 50 shaggers
in the summer to around 100 in the winter months. VFW has a tile dance
floor that is approx. 24' x 30’. There is ample seating in the facility.
Smoking is allowed but the dance area is NON-SMOKING. A
cash bar is available and on special occasions members bring in food.
You will recognize the building by the American Eagles painted on the
outside!
This club has introduced over 1500 people to the Shag dance and the
music. Members visit other shag club parties and attend SOS.

THE VFW POST 8083
BELLEVIEW (note from club)
After dancing at several different places we ran out of a place to
dance. The VFW was kind enough to let us use their hall for our dance on
Tuesday night, this was the only night that would work for for them on a
regular basis. With the help of Bob Poucher ( Kitchen & Bar Manager), Jan
The Bartender , John Thornberg ( Past Commander) and a few others they
convinced the officers to let me lease their hall for our dance as long as
we would cover the overhead and they could make a little profit for the post
with a door charge, and kitchen & Bar sales. The only problem we had was the
bartenders did not want to work late on Tuesday night because that was a day
they closed early and the post did not want to add the expense of paying a
bartender to stay late. Jan stepped up and volunteered to work and Bob
offered to work the kitchen. We have been there going on three years.
There is no outside food or drink of any kind allowed to be brought in the
VFW unless we are given special permission. I set up the tables every
Tuesday and with the help of a few others clean up before we leave.
The post agreed to a $3.00 door charge and agreed to give the instructors
$1.00 per person on anyone coming in prior to 6:15, after 6;15 the total
door charge goes to the post. They felt this would help cover their gas
money. The DJ has a tip jar and does not get paid, the money collected
helps cover new music cost, equipment maintenance & repair. Only
the people attending keep the dance going. When we have a large turn out it
helps compensate for the sparse turn outs.
