When And Where We Dance

Saturdays - 3D Club & Sports Bar 8pm-10
parties at Hern's Hangar

Take a drive through the mountains ( literally through the mountains via tunnels) up I-77 to southern West Virginia, and you’ll enter the highland city of Beckley. Surrounded by mountains and farmlands, the Beckley Shag Club brings the Carolina Shag to West Virginia. Begun in 1990 by Charlie Cline and 6 other original members, this club has grown and hosts several of the popular weekend shag events that shaggers look forward to each year. The annual Mountain Boogie Walk in May and the Runway Boogie party in August, attract shaggers from far and wide to the famous “Hangar” parties. These parties actually take place in a cleared out Airport Hangar  furnished with a large wood dance floor. Many of the Who’s Who in the dance world plan for this weekend event.

Smaller parties, 100 members and guests, are held at the White Oak Country Club in Oak Hill. Parties begin at 6:30, with light dinner served at 7:00. Cost is usually $5 for guests and free for members and includes free beer and soft drinks, with a cash bar also available. Top Djs spin the tunes for the parties while the dancers keep the 30’ x 27’ parquet dance floor hot. There is no smoking in the dance area, but a nice patio is located right outside the French doors for the smokers. The Beckley Area Shag Club also dances on the last Friday of the month at Morgan’s Food & Spirits, where lessons are  taught on Monday evenings.

This club loves to shag and they don’t let the dance floor cool the whole evening. Arrive at their party ready to dance! Great dancing, music and atmosphere among good friends.

Directions to White Oak Country Club via I-77N:

Drive North on I-77 and continue through Beckley till Exit 48 ( you will pass through 2 tunnels and 2 tolls - so have $1.25 and another $.25 ready). Take Exit #48 -North Beckley/Summersville to Route 19N (Mountaineer Expressway) . Travel about 9 miles until you see the WV 16N Pea Ridge Road Exit toward Oak Hill. Make a left off exit and then bear right over the bridge. Go to the second stop light and turn left onto Jones Avenue. Travel 0.6 miles and you will see Tyree Funeral Home on the left (white building), make a right here onto Country Club Road and travel 1 mile. There are two brick columns on the right and the Club is between them. There is no sign but you can see the golf course on the righ before you reach the drive way.
