Travel along the coast of North Carolina toward Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach and you will find a fun little beach club  called Memories Beach & Shag Club, the home of the Atlantic Beach Shag Club. The Atlantic Beach Shag Club meets on the 2^nd Friday of every month but they also dance at Memories every Friday and Saturday night. The club also sponsors a monthly party each with it’s own theme, such as a Chili cook-off, Beach Party, Hot dog party, Frogmore Stew party and much more. Started in 1990, this club now has around 300 members. Memories has a main wood dance floor that is 18’ x 20’ and also a dance floor off to the side for practice or dance that is 10’ x 12’. Shag lessons are offered Tuesday and Wednesday nights. A $8 cover charge gets you in the club. Smoking is allowed in the club. A cash bar is also available. Different DJ’s rotate playing the tunes weekly and the schedule can be found on the Atlantic Beach Shag Clubs website. Memories was built mainly for the shag club and it’s members, but is open on Saturday night to the public and on Friday’s after the club meeting time is over. Friday nights are the biggest crowd nights and they get a lot of tourists visiting during the summer months. The Atlantic Beach Shag Club’s biggest party of the year is the Christmas Party held at the Dunes where they collect Toys for Tots. The ABSC also supports other local charities such as Morehead City Domestic Violence Service, and the Salvation Army. Memories has also been host to many sanctioned shag contests.
